In Schools
I have worked with many schools, having been requested for different activities throughout the UK since I became involved with Outreach in 2008. I am available to attend school events as a research engineer to discuss my qualifications, career path, engineering as a career and my research topic. I also offer fun and engaging sessions for school students from year 6 to year 10; see below for a brief outline of the types of sessions I run. Please contact me for further details and availability.
Lessons: I specialise in sound, vibrations and forces. However I have a broad interest in science, engineering and technology and use many quick hands-on experiments and demonstrations which can be built into a school lesson format and tailored to the specific area of the curriculum you wish to enhance.
Half-Day and Full-Day Session: This type of activity involves an introduction to engineering and science followed by a hands-on activity based around a specific theme or problem. The day involves investigation, team work, designing, building and testing. The project and delivery are tailored to the timetable of the school.
After School: I offer a range of STEM Club activities which I can deliver over a term for up to one hour a week after (or before) the school day. I bring everything required to run a hands-on STEM club. All projects include investigation, science and engineering methodology, applied maths and science calculations, team work, design, building, testing and self evaluation. There is even a prize for the most successful team!
Teacher CPD: Having been involved with a diverse range of education providers I have a broad knowledge of STEM education practice. I am available to run workshops with teachers of STEM subjects in which I offer information on my specialist field of engineering as a leading researcher in railway dynamics or a different perspective on the education of science and engineering, including applied maths. Within the workshop teachers will have the opportunity to discover hands-on demonstrations and activities which can be adapted to their lessons, as well as receive materials which can be used in school. These sessions can be tailored to your specific time and subject requirements.
